the lens seems to be showing some vignetting & distortion that helps the look.
but mainly I think it's his pose & lighting.

i think we see most of the same feeling (pop) in this photo except he takes up less of the frame so he doesn't come across as so gigantic. plus the lighting is much more even so there's a bit less 3d around the nose and such.
