Decided the 50mm 1.4 would be a good all-rounder based on Ken's recommendation, absolutely not disappointed. Quite soft at 1.4, but holy shit at f/4 this thing is sharp. Picrel is 100% crop on a 36mp sensor.
>>4217532Yeah man, 200 for just the body. I've found that if someone is trying to sell a bundle of gear and are willing to split you can get things way cheaper. A lot of people see the big price tag of the bundle and keep on scrolling, but it's always worth asking the question if they'll sell a lens or a body.
>>4217534I've only shot MILC until now so AF has never been a problem. 99% of the time just use the centre point and focus + recompose, sometimes with BBAF. I set the D800e on a tripod and found that using live view, even after focusing on something, I can twist the focus ring back and forth just a little bit each way, there's definitely some slop there. It's not much but at f/1.4, focused on something ~1m away, that little bit of slop will shift focus about ±2.5cm or so. I've had to set the AF Fine-Tune to -20, because it was consistently hitting focus behind my subject. The fine-tune fixed that problem, but still about 1/5 shots just misses completely. I figured it's just a limitation of the mechanical AF. I don't think there would be any difference between AF and AF-D versions optically or in the focus mechanism.
>>4217609Agree 99%, I have found C-AF Tracking to be useful for some wildlife that keeps moving, but the other 99% of the time it's the smallest single point available. Yes, 90% of those features are just marketing bullshit to get people to upgrade bodies when they don't need to.
>>4217624>btw, I dunno who else this helps, but shooting at the camera's native ISO helps a lot with capturing maximum dynamic range and minimal noise in the shadows. Also, expose for the highlights, there's much more detail in the shadows in a RAW file. Once the highlights clip, they're gone gone.Very good summary. Basically how I expose these days.
