I learnt photography on a manual film SLR that had a light meter, I'd pretty much only shoot at f/8 and adjust shutter speed when necessary. Upgraded to a different SLR that had aperture priority and shot the same way but the camera would do the shutter speeds for me.
I'd personally recommend trying out aperture or shutter priority over full auto.
