Auto aperture is a relatively recent development. When it comes to Exaktas, for example, auto lenses had an extension that went over the shutter button and allowed you to have an exposure preview while staying wide open before depressing that extension halfway. Pic related. Funnily enough with some of the lenses I own I find myself I have less automation than people with Exaktas and lenses that supported this had so many decades ago. There's also preset lenses and lenses that had that extension as a separate part. But yes, the rangefinder has the advantage that the image is always bright in the viewfinder regardless of aperture.
