I was thinking that, of all the Nikon DX cameras, the D5x00 series was the best equipped - in both capabilities, features, size, and price point - to compete with a lot of the mid-range mirrorless systems like the Sony a6x00 series and Fuji X-T20. It was perhaps overly optimistic to hope for a serious rework of the next D5x00 camera within this context.
Indeed, the specs of the D7500 do seem to reflect your thinking. Its not quite as "professional" as previous D7x00 series cameras, and has a lot of the specs that I was honestly expecting from the next D5x00 camera; with the exception of stuff like the penta-prism, buffer depth, and shooting speed. To me, the D7500 falls somewhere between the D7200 and D5600; though whether this means that the D5x00 line got kicked in the head is indeed unclear. I really hope not.
