But just from a subjective anecdotal point of view I can get a little bit more detail with a V550, and a lot more detail with the Fuji Frontier I sometimes use, so I think you're on the money with the software issue being the problem.
Portra 160 in medium format is extremely sharp and fine-grained, and the Mamiya RZ lenses are excellent and made for professional use, so you can expect a lot more detail out of a good scan I'd imagine
