Central American here, you don't. My third world hole is by no means a brazilian favela but can get close. I advice renting a car and using a telephoto, that's what I do. Also stick to the nice parts and avoid nightime. Don't use bright coloured clothing or shorts, blend in as much as possible. Don't use a big backpack and avoid public transportation like the plague.

Thanks for the tip. I think I will save for a 50mm prime and a ~200mm zoom for the shots I take while driving. Having a zoom lens really makes you lazy but there are some places that I'm unable to get close to.
