The short: literal retard newfag here. What camera should I buy?
The long: I've been interested in getting into some casual hobby photography for a few years, and right now I have a little bit of money burning a hole in my pocket so I decided it's time to seize the day. I really have absolutely no idea what to look for (I'm just starting that initial research phase of the fundamentals), all I know is I have a friend who is semi-pro who strongly recommended the mirrorless Sony cameras to me due to their lack of bulk and he insists that I would appreciate the interface and features coming from smartphone use. Ultimately I think I want whatever is going to be the best tool capable of the best image quality for the money, as well as being a good platform for learning. He is of the opinion that the Nikons and Canons are for 'old school' people and that if you're coming in fresh with no preconceptions that the Sonys are superior. Thoughts?
My budget is $500AU, but something under $400AU would be a pretty comfy. I don't really want to spend too much because for all I know photography might prove to not be for me, but I want something capable enough that it won't instantaneously be a bottleneck if I decide to stick with it.
btw, what is the deal with camera 'mileage'? I saw someone on gumtree list how many photos had been taken with it in their listing.
