Switching the dial to AEL only locks the exposure if you have the shutter half pressed, which can sometimes be a balancing act, since the shutter actuation distance is already shallow as fuck. You can leave the leader out by popping the back when the motor stops the first time, let it ride to rewind fully. The frame line preview lever can be sticky, sometimes displaying more than one set of frames. Just twiddle it a bit to go back to the set frames.
As someone else already said, you can very easily focus in landscape then turn the camera, I usually do this for portrait shots. Your VF and RF windows are multi-coated, so flare is less of an issue but it still happens. Since you are using a 40mm lens with 35mm frame lines, those frame lines are probabaly pretty close to your actual FOV since frame lines are usually like, 90-95% actual coverage.
Definitely use zone focusing to your advantage.
