I mostly just wing it. Almost all my photos come from going on hikes, so a bit of thought comes in at what location I'm going and what lens will be the best on that location and that's it, i don't bring more lenses just the one I decided to put on in the morning. Most thoughts go into finding an interesting subject and then then composition (to a certain degree, photography is hobby next to hiking, oif I have to move heaven and earth or wait for hours to get a better composition, nah, I'll hike on). The third thought is always worrying about focus, if there's one thing I hate, it's getting home after a nice hike, and seeing an otherwise really nice photo, being out of focus.
I do go out sometimes planning a a specific photo but the idea is quite broad in my head (catching a nice lightning storm for example or going into town for a nice night shot of the centre - never really more concrete, I guess that's one of the things that separate me as an amateur from the pros). Pic related, took this afternoon on a hike.
