After writing this I realized it was rather long. Sorry in advance, but hopefully it provides sufficient info to make a suggestion for me. Thanks for anyone's help.
i've been thinking about replacing my 35mm f/2 for a little while now and I'm contemplating between the 35mm f/2 IS USM and the f/1.4L
My sense is that the f/2 refresh has improved dramatically on the old f/2, bringing it VERY close to the f/1.4L in terms of image sharpness, out of focus elements, etc... and the presence of IS and addition of USM sounds great (both have USM, but my old f/2 is pretty loud). Am I misreading things? Is the f/1.4L still miles ahead of the 35mm f/2 IS USM?
I'm not eager to spend ~$1000 on a used 1.4L (probably a little more, given my market), but I can, and I'd *really* rather not do *two* upgrades on the same focal length, so if I'm eventually going to get a 1.4L anyway I'd rather just bite the bullet now than buy a (probably new, because I'm not seeing any on craigslist) 35mm f/2 IS USM and sell later (essentially losing some money on my 35 f/2 now and then again on another 35 f/2 a few years down the road).
Mostly I shoot street-ish stuff (with a crop body, so the 35 is more of a normal lens for me), and occasionally I go hiking and shoot landscapes and stuff (for which I've had a 10-22mm that I've been reasonably satisfied by). Sometimes, but not that often, I like shooting people with the 35mm (full body portrait or group stuff).
I'm also potentially open to suggestions for an upgrade to the 10-22mm lens, but it's hard to find a suitable wide angle lens for a crop body, so I just assumed I wouldn't find one.
