They also give you somethng to rest in your palm so your fiingers arent supporting the weight AND turning the zoom. Thats more important than most people probably realise. Thats where the tennis ball grip (above) was really good.
image related: note that the collar/mount is built into the lens, and can be rotated/removed...and the grey lump unde rit is 3dprinted, just to cause less of a bruise in my palm over extended use - the square geometry of the collar's mount face isn't terribly ergonomic).
I realise you think 1Kg is heavy, but it's not really, and theres only really one section of your deltoid muscle (in your shouder) that is required to hold a camera at your face. SO it buffs up pretty fast if you raise/lower the camera enough. Admittedly I have trouble if I need to hold it for more than a few dozen seconds, but thats where you condition yourself to instantly raise the camera any time you see shit happening/about to happen, and lower it fairly soon after.
Telephoto can either be about lots of waiting with the camera in your face, or about being quick to raise and shoot. After using a monpod for a while I recognise the benefits, but ultimately its better to be light(er) and fast for shooting subjects that move.
Tripods have their purpose, but I see far too any people assuming they need one.
