The wole theater was buried by christian visigoths after the fall of the roman empire, as theater was considered an immorality and the building had no other practical use. Ironically, this attempt to erase the monument and roman memory from history was the only thing that protected it from being destroyed and taken apart to use its stones and pillars in other constructions.
