I just read a great essay in A Matter of Memory - Photography as Object in the Digital Age, that kinda expands on Barthes and maybe suggests that he may not have seen the whole picture (pun intended). The essay explores the photo in the light of Marcel Proust's Swann's Way as a powerful trigger to a memory that can bring back smells, tastes and the feeling of the moment it was taken. It looks at the photo as a much more living object that Camera Lucida.
