I was using darktable's default profiled denoise settings and being undecided as to apply it or not, but there's probably a happy medium just scaling the sliders back. I'd read that up to f16 was safe, but I'll have to test it myself as you suggest.
After posting and seeing the images full screen I noticed the smeared look, which I'd missed while viewing them in the window of the editor. I'll try to check them full screen, and probably on different devices before calling it done next time.
