Something about the distortion of wider FLs seems appealing without having any hard evidence. Maybe I'm just trying to cram too much stuff into the shot.
Pic rel is actually a 400mm shot from like 3300m away, not wide at all so I understand your point about reaching out at times. I tried 35mm in this same spot and basically got nothing more than a horizon and a busy foreground. In fairness this was a lookout point.
