I'm using an inherited Sony VCT-670RM tripod, designed for video cameras, but repurposed for regular photography since its a damn tank. However its a little bulky and not something you can shove in a pocket. Ain't a personal recommendation since I have no comparison, but its what I have, so I make do.
Depending on the size and weight of the lens, a ringmount might also be prudent to prevent sagging and strain on the camera body due to the different center of balance.
Test things out in the store if you can, no point spending on gear you won't need, but not having the ""correct"" gear will make for poorer results.
