Crop sensors do not receive a dimmer image. They do not apply more gain. They do mislabel their ISOs! But you can adjust for that.
They have a smaller sample size so photon counting errors (AKA photon shot noise) are magnified. Other sources of noise are not, only photon counting errors. Same as a narrow survey has more useless data than a large scale one
