That's just generally speaking; there are plenty of good, sharp zooms with good speed, and there are some shit primes. A 70-200 zoom is a pretty good jack of all trades lens, and is useful in most situations. Being able to zoom gives you a lot of freedom in composition because you don't have to zoom with your feet, so that is the biggest advantage. Unless you're trying to get the sharpest possible photo, for some specific reason, a 70-200 will do you fine for most stuff a 50 prime would do
