I did not buy mine WITH the Canon 70-300 - But later decided I wanted a zoom lens
After doing some reading, I decided that the Sigma APO DG 70-300 would fit my bill and would overall be better value. So far I'm really happy with it for a ~$150 lens. And it has a red ring so >muh red ring (even though that's just signifying the APO coating NOT a super high end lens like Canon L glass)
Pic related is a snapshit taken with it out on a walk with my gf. I spent about 0 time actually composing or aiming the shot and actually didn't even stop walking and I think it performed quite well. Yes it's not a masterpiece photo but it managed to capture it just fine in my opinion.
