Yeah, Kubuntu 18.04 now and taskbar is still pretty big.
Applications I'm really focused on are almost always fullscreen though, so it works for me.
FYI: the left panel shown on darktable here is really the only thing I use from all the import functions that are normally there. ie: I dont use them.
I do also recall needing to grapple with some shitty distinction between darktable's 'file browser' and 'zoomable light table' that pissed me off and may have been broken and stuck...at one time.
'File Manager' mode is what I use.
Kinda bummed that it no longer (or was that rawtherapee?) shows the cropping area on each thumbnail though.
