>>3953185A lot of these older cameras used 1.35v Mercury Batteries that are no longer available due to environmental reasons. They specifically used a mercury battery because it held a steady 1.35v which the metering circuit required to get a steady reading. The LR44, which is an alkaline battery, does not hold a constant voltage and starts to taper off as the battery is used. The good thing is, batteries like Silver Oxide and Zinc Air are a good alternative to the mercury battery since they're able to hold a steady voltage like mercury battery does.
You have two options today, you can buy a WeinCell, which is a Zinc Air drop in replacement with the correct 1.35v, or you can get the camera voltage converted so that it'll accept the higher voltage, but more affordable SIlver Oxide batteries, like the SR44, and give an accurate reading.
Weincells can be picked up at B and H or perhaps another camera store in the UK for ~$5.
