I act and dress like a dumb ass. Thongs, tshirt and shorts with a thrift shop ugly camera bag. If I need to stop when I find a photo opportunity, I put the camera up to my eye and fumble around with my camera, pretending to change the settings and pretend to take a photo of something dumb like a bunch of flowers, statue, building "the view" or whatever's around and when the times right move the camera to the framing I want, snap, move back to the boring thing and take camera down. Seems to work well and no one gives a shit or notices me. Other times I pre focus and snap a photo quickly and continue on my way with the flow of the crowd. I feel having a compact camera helps you fit in immensely, you can dress how you want but if you're swinging around a slr people are going to take notice.
