The other option would be using a wide angle, so that people don't realize you're taking their photo, but you have to get very close.

Then, I 'optimized' my feed to match the algorithm: Keep stuff that gets likes and delete shots that don't work. After a few months I started the (un)follow game and it worked pretty well. Most of my following is probably inactive now.
