Something I've found particularly useful was someone mentioning that you need to be much more deliberate with creating depth when you shoot square, and there are lots of ways to do that once you play around enough.
Also I don't know about your camera, but on my Fuji's if I shoot raw+jpeg I can set it to 1:1 ratio and the viewfinder crops to that. It isn't very easy to keep square compositions in mind when you're looking at a 3:2 frame.
