I guess the culture was more laid back though. Dunno what happened, instagram? even rebbit which had a sub with higher quality posts (back when /r/pictures was more than just the shit is now) turned into absolute shit and I unsubbed after a while, all the other mediocre subs also turned shit.
THAT SAID, this is amateur photography, it has always been like this, no matter when or where. If you expect more quality you have to engage directly, or irl, with a good circle of photographers... and even then you need to be very careful, tons of shit out there in contemporary galleries, exhibitions and so on.
