When I'm doing split grade I'll start at a 0 filter and do a test strip, pick a time I like for the highlights and mid tones and then I'll do a second test strip where I expose the paper for my 0 contrast time then do a contrast 4 test strip over that.
It's a good way to get a baseline for fine tuning.
