Nowadays these villages have become tourist attractions precisely because they have mostly retained their 19th century look. There are only a few that weren't maimed by the soviets, and they're all located in heavily wooded areas. I assume this is because it didn't make sense for the soviets to establish collective farms in such remote and agriculturally infertile places.
