Probably a Pacific Image dedicated 35mm scanner. DO NOT get a flatbed.

And no, the quality will not be as good as what you can easily achieve with a DSLR + Macro + Nikon ES-2.

Definitively have a camera you reaaally don't give a fuck about. It's going to pour rain, there will be big waves, rivers and lakes that you'll will want to be crossed, caves to explore. Some of the best photo ops will present themselves in situations where you would probably hesitate to pull out your most prized camera. Even a simple waterproof point and shit will probably snap some of your favourite photos of the trip...as it's these less than ideal situations that will probably become your strongest memories.
