I'm not OP if you think that. I recently bought an X-T3, so I'm not looking for a larger sensor camera anymore, I already bought it. It was the lowest cost option that ticked all the boxes for the kind of photography I wanted to do, and I'm very happy with it.

I would have been miserable both if I had chained myself to my phone, or if I had overspent on full frame gear, and neither would have been conducive to me going out, taking pictures and becoming a better photographer. Overspending doesn't make people better photographers, but gear masochism is just as bad, and that's why gear really does matter.

Pretty sure troll, but I'll bite: I think this is an important conversation to have, but it is a long way off 'ultra small format' cameras taking over. Using an S21 Ultra the other day has made me contemplate disposing my Tokina 11-16mm. I'd still keep my FF ultra-wide but mostly due to more reliable AF and better low light performance for critical work. If the S21+ had reliable AF in dim room lighting and shoot decently at ISO 1600-3200 then it would basically fulfill my 'wide coverage' needs.

Longer lenses are another thing entirely. Samsung's 'Space Zoom' is horse shit. The digitally stitched 'optical zoom' feels janky. As the lenses on those things are only like 10-20mm f2.8 (like 50-80mm f/20 effective) they have super deep DoF. If you aren't keen to have dramatic DoF effects then you just need to wait for sensors to get better. However, if you want delicious bokeh at those apertures you'll have to rely on that sweet 'AI processing' you are talking about which is kinda horseshit atm (pic related). Even LIDAR and ToF implementations could be subject to computation errors due to differences in spectral reflectance/refraction of different materials (i.e glass: pic related). Don't get me wrong, ultra high resolution point cloud data and various depth detection methodologies (incandescent/IR/acoustic??) could very well allow for highly accurate and versatile 'portrait modes'. To my eyes its not quite there yet. Lets reassess in 15-20 years?

I'm not as experienced with the mechanical engineering side of it but look at the Sharp Aquos R6. One of the few (only?) phones to use a 1" sensor. Uses a 7mm f1.9 (effective ~ 18mm f/5) lens. It can render 'real' bokeh unlike the fake AI effects. What if they make a 20mm f/.7 (equiv. 50 mm f1.8) that will fit in your pocket? What will our cameras and lenses look like in 50 years?
