Kit lenses don't become as sharp as a 1000 USD lens just by stopping down but it can help you get there, applying a bit of sharpening on post can help the cause.
Also, zoom lenses have a tendency to go soft the closer you are to the max focal length it has, shooting halfway through it should deliver the best sharpness possible, hope that helps you.
