Kino has as much depth to it as any other broad study of photography, your best bet is to watch the movies, watch the documentaries of the movies, research what they had to work with in terms of gear and see how close you can get.
You could get close with digital, but film is going to not only be closer, it's going to be much more authentic - and I think that's what you need to strive for.
