>>3242427hard question to which there are a lot of answers
The way I've gotten into galleries and shows most reliably is knowing the right people. This involves a lot of footwork like attending shows, doing studio visits, and participating in the scene you're trying to become a part of. Cold calling locations doesn't work as well. Responding to open calls for art can be very hit and miss. It also get's expensive fast so try to target CFAs that are essentially a shoe in for you or have a jurist you really want to see your work.
>you pay a fee and then try to sell your work? I've been approached a few times by places that do that both locally and on the coasts. These places generally are a borderline scam and make for very bad blood in the art world. 'Pay to Play' galleries can work and can sell work but to my understanding usually black list you and waste your time.
>or is it more like it's free but they take 50% commission of all sales? This is the standard with plenty of variation in the % taken on sales.
