A slower shutter will only let in more ambient light into the shot, the flash is so fast even 1/500 is too slow to affect flash light. Make sure you are shooting within the sync speed of the camera, there is usually a little flash icon on the shutter dial or something.
Easy mode, get a TTL flash if your camera supports it ($$$$)
Easier mode is getting something like a Metz, set the ISO + aperture on the flash and shooting, the flash has a sensor on it and cuts the flash early depending on distance. Works with literally any camera with a sync port.
