>>3036054Vans are the way to go. It's made traveling super easy and it's the perfect compromise between living comfort and size. I'm fine with roughing it a bit and don't need all the luxuries while I'm on the road.
Mine is rather spartan. I pulled out the back two rows of seats and built a raised bed that gives me storage underneath. I put a swivel on the front passenger seat that lets me turn it around and kick my feet up while having a place to sit comfortably. I shit in the woods or the desert, or at a gas station if I'm swinging through town. I usually take a sponge bath out of a jug of water every few days and then pay for a shower at a rec center or something once a week. Death Valley had a pool in the hotel where you could pay $5 for a shower and also do laundry for a few bucks. Mostly I just try to find camp sites like pic related. There's so much of this in the west and it's all legal and free.
When I'm doing shows it's a bit of a struggle because the van is full. If I'm in a Colorado mountain town I set up my booth and then sleep in my empty van down a dirt road while the van is empty. If I'm doing a show in a bigger city I'll get a room with airbnb which is often cheaper than trying to pay for a campground in a city. I haven't yet tried city street camping but I've heard of many traveling artists doing it.
