The sensors who have advanced to stage 4 is:
-Smartphone sensors (Sony)
-1 inch sensors (Sony
-Full Frame (Sony)

The sensors who have advanced to stage 3 is:
-APS-C (Samsung)
-Medium Format (Sony)

The sensors who are stuck at stage 1 is:
-APS-C (Everybody but Samsung)
-Micro 4/3 <----------There's your guy.
-Full Frame (Canon)

It's the Canon one that's overpriced compared to Nikon and Sony.
On the Kardashev scale:
Sony is a Type IV civilization. It cost many billions to research this, and the tech really just to sell future cars and mobiles phones.
Nikon is a Type III civilization. Smart investment, don't have to sacrifice billions on factories and engineers, only a little behind.
Canon is a Type 1 civilization. Barbarians.

There isn't one. Everybody would stagnate at step 1 without Sony.

There are quite simply 2 fronts that pour billions of dollars into sensor research right now.
Sony, and car companies.

The camera industry would be at the mercy of fucking Toyota, Volkswagen, and General Motors to advance sensor technology if not for Sony.
