>>2901636I shot an airshow with it last month and have been shooting plenty of birds lately and I feel comfortable saying the slow AF is a myth when paired with a pro-level body. If you understand how the limiter works it just jumps into focus and when you have it set well at your expected working distance it can in some cases outpace the AF-S version, which only has that lousy close/far limiter. It's fast, good, cheap, and it lasts forever, which makes it an instant classic in my book.
Besides, for serious wildlife you're going to have a tripod or monopod anyway. When you can get optics approaching the 300 f2.8 for $400 you can buy the lens, a high-end body, a nice tripod+monopod, and still have a couple hundred bucks to travel to where the critters are. You can go from having absolutely nothing to having a solid, portable wildlife kit, all for around the same price as the AF-S (with inferior build and a shit tripod collar) or the PF. The PF is absolutely a marvel of technology and I don't doubt it puts out superior IQ, but in the end it's still horrendously overpriced.
