The operative phrase here is "open shade", which essentially any area that's in shadow and lit only by skylight. You'll want a a decent overhang overhead to block any direct sunlight (so, a thick tree canopy, or awnings, or a nook into a doorway, or even just the shady side of a building) and you want bright light coming in from one direction, without any actual sunlight hitting your subject. This creates a natural, gigantic softbox with natural catchlights and flatters the hell out of your subject
Avedon used a lot of open shade for his In The American West, where he would literally just tape up some white paper to the shady side of whatever building was convenient and start shooting.
