The image on the left was actually taken the first day I had bought the camera and from memory I had applied vsco's ektachrome 100vs lightroom filter on it. A lot of the photos I took on the mju from that time had that same filter applied.
I never really wanted to spend too much time editing the photos from a digicam from 2003 so I would almost always chuck some kind of filter on it and change the settings to my liking. I still use that same process today but I wont go for such strong filters as often now.
I think if you're shooting with old digicams the old vsco lightroom filters are great fun and you can find them online for free easily enough.
As for what quality settings on the camera i use, I have only ever used the HQ one as it saves on memory a little bit but I haven't given it too much thought.
With the flash I think for most instances I will have it turned off unless I am taking photos inside or of something dark. I agree that the flash is harsh on this camera and needs a touch of editing to even out the image.
