Did a test a while ago on srgb display plugged in and images in various colour formats. If image in argb had icc, colours in thumbnail were still incorrectly displayed, but when image was opened it was properly converted. Image in argb and icc gone, and it didn't display properly. Can't be bothered to test it right now, but if you've srgb display, and see the same happening on this image when you open it, it's still the same.
But, yeah, safest is still to convert into srgb when uploading.
