I find myself more communicable, often I end up striking up conversations with the subject after taking their photos. Then they let me take a lot more and give me more time to compose. It's like street photography that turns into portraiture.
It can be done without the drugs though. Just go out with a good attitude and a mission. You are there to take photos and you love photography. So be happy when you do it, a happy person with a camera will probably get better shots of people than the loner shooting buildings.
