I recently purchased Hanes polyester fleece thermals and some proper wool socks. Cotton is the worst fabric to wear, not only for cold weather but for activewear in general (especially friction areas gloves and socks!).
You gotta go synthetic for its heat-retaining water-wicking properties, but don't go crazy expensive. I wore my wool socks and thermals /out/ camping last night and it got to freezing and rained raw in the morning and i was toasty as tits all night, even my toes. For a coat I have a Walls work jacket (it's a generic Carhartt but I love it). Over my underroos I just wore jeans on the outside. Make sure at least your base layer is synthetic and you're good to go. If you're really going to get wet you want to go full synthetic and get Frogg Toggs™ rain gear. Shit's amazing - totally waterproof but it breathes!
pic is my new shit when I got home from Sears and posted it on /out/
