Mirrorless cameras are neat. They have DSLR sensors in them, but no mirror. Much more compact with same image quality. Since their flange distance is si short (distance between sensor and lens), you can adapt pretty much any lens from any DSLR camera to them. Plus with more modern bodies you can even autofocus them.
Mirrorless isn't all positives though, their autofocus isn't as fast as the faster DSLRs yet, and they lack optical viewfinders (but do have electronic view finders). Since they are extremely new, they are also super short on lenses. Some manufacturers like sony are pumping out 8 or 9 a year though.
The a6000 is probably the best value camera under $1000. The kit lens sucks at everything except being compact as hell though.
