Get the best D7xxx body you can afford and 1-2 manual focus Nikkor AI or AI-S lenses and git gud with that setup. I recommend the 55mm 2.8 micro which is very sharp at all distances but accommodates taking pictures of stupid shit close up in your house when you don't want to go out. The E series lenses (50mm, 100mm, etc.) are also very good and cheap. Check local camera stores, craigslist, and KEH.
The D7xxx bodies hold their value very well, meter automatically with AI/AI-S lenses, and will enable you to upgrade to Nikkor D series AF lenses (much cheaper than the modern G series), which the lower-end D3xxx and D5xxx do not. Then, if you upgrade to full frame, all your lenses will work immediately and you won't need to sell any DX G series lenses.
