Normally you decide based on the IR filter strength you want or if you want full spectrum (my D50 has 720nm IR inside), the condition of the camera, if it has modified firmware installed (a lot of the Canon ones have preinstalled custom firmware to help with infrared), etc. Mine came with a custom white balance preset preinstalled which was nice.
I tend to keep an eye out for auctions, infrared is a total niche but some of the Buy It Now prices are absurd. I bid on my D50 during an auction and seemed to be the only one interested. Suited me fine.
Again, even a cheap p&s that is converted to infrared will be way better than using an IR filter. And most if not all of them shoot Raw/DNG.
