Considering that the Demon Slayer anime is the biggest grossing movie in Japanese history (and during a pandemic and state of emergency), means that at least Fuji knows how to appeal to casuals in the modern era.
The main problems, I feel, are that most consumers are completely clueless about every aspect of cameras. They don't understand focal length, they don't understand aperture (or specifically f numbers) and they can sort of understand shutter speed. They don't understand why a camera needs to have interchangeable lenses, when a single zoom seems seems totally satisfactory to them.
Most normies just take a picture with their phone, think it looks amazing and then say that people who get an ILC are "wasting" their money.
Think about how Apple, Samsung, various Chinese companies all try to compete with each other on their cameras and stuff. And then all these various gadget magazines that compare a phone with some DSLR from 2009 and then say that "cameras are dead".
