Seriously, when I was starting out I was told constantly to ditch the kit-lens (18-55 IS v1) by armchair photographers and DXO sharpness wankers, but after I took it overseas a couple of times, stopped down the lens when I used it, and actually got decent results. Actually is alright to use in the studio too!
is it as good as a decent prime? hell no. but it gets the job done
