- Smaller front element => Cheaper to build, costs less than the lens to the right
- Enables 3 or more zoom groups because we are no longer restricted the inner barrels with helical grooves => enables more sophisticated optical designs
Plus this image is deceptive, the fair comparison would be the bigger lens being zoomed out, making it even bigger than the lens to the left. The lens to the left is as big as it's ever going to be, it's really, realy compact due to the new optical design philosophy.
It's like unlocking a new technology.
