Low end Canon P&S is in my limited experience (of Powershot A800 and A810) very easy to mod. Those had a thin IR cut filter which can be removed or replaced with polyester filter with no change to focusing. (But you may want something better, depending of your pixel peepiness.)
Other cameras may have an optically thick filter that affects focusing.
Do not misplace any screws or break ribbon cable connectors, take a snap of every step. Start with something you can afford to break.
I bought my A800 for 40€ new.
