I set the picture effect to B&W (I shoot raw so I don't mind) and that seems to help, but I still have the problem of dots appearing before and after stuff is actually in focus. It gets me like 80% of the way there, but looking at the photos on my monitor afterwards, or zooming in at the time clearly shows I was off a bit.
I think I remember reading that the best place within the peaking ”band” is about 1/3 of the way in, as the DoF transition behind is larger than the transition in front. I always forget to test for this at the time so I dunno how true that is.
I'd really like to be able to reliably MF on people's/animal's faces without having to zoom in and either move the box around, or focus in the center and recompose which makes me lose perfect focus anyway.
